Not much good has come from the sagging global economy -- until now.
It was announced this week that The Skins Game will not be held this year, and perhaps may be eliminated entirely due to financial constraints.
Made-for-TV golf events are not a good idea. Made-for-TV golf events without Tiger Woods, who hasn't played in The Skins Game in years, are especially bad ideas.
It was conceived as a high-stakes competition where players are mic'd up, allowing them to show off their personalities. Two problems: Guys playing for six figures a hole -- even in a good economy -- is obnoxious and, most importantly, golfers don't have personalities to show off.
This might be breaking news to golf purists, but PGA Tour players aren't interesting or funny. Never were. Lee Trevino, for instance, had the rep as being a funny, likeable guy. He wasn't. He was annoying, like the dude with whom you and your buddies get paired on the weekend who won't shut up, tells bad jokes and gives everyone unsolicited tips.
If anything, it's amazing that thing lasted as long as it did.
