Superbowl Sunday

Another strong showing by The Crew two weeks ago, when on Championship Sunday we hit another Super Play with the Falcons + 4.5. The win ran our record for the season to 24-10-2 (71 percent). Not really sure how we accomplished that, and like we have said many times this season, it will never happen again. In fact, our over/under for next year is currently sitting at 42 percent, and there is a lot of steam on the under (-200).

Apologies to all three of our regular readers, who were no doubt irate when we failed to post a Playhouse last week. But even low-stakes, immaterial handicappers that no one cares about need a week off from time to time.

Besides, we are doing all we can to avoid turning our attention to college hoops, which for us falls somewhere between curling and male youth figure skating on the food chain of spectator sports. Indeed, where many see tradition and pageantry, we see far too many white guys (we are white, calm down) who in a best case scenario will be playing professionally in Yemen this time next year.

How bad is the product? Pat Forde of Yahoo! Sports penned a column Saturday night about a missed dunk. And we like Forde, whose weekly Forde Yard dash feature during the college football season is as good as it gets.

For these reasons -- and many, many more -- we give college basketball scant attention, if even that, and our picks are basically a loose combination of ill-conceived conjecture (They have hot coeds, it's an easy cover) and long-held grudges (Pitino screwed me in '99, dude is an auto fade). Grudgingly, however, we continue watch, because in a terrific bit of irony, our disinterest has spawned success.

Truth be told, college hoops has been a consistent money maker for us going back many years, and no amount of indifference on our part has been about to stop this troubling trend. And while it hasn't been quit-your-job-and-move-to-Hawaii-money, much to our chagrin it has indeed been profitable. Perhaps this is the year we'll have our ass handed to us. We can only hope.

A couple thoughts before getting to the Super Play of the Day...

Every year around this time, the media will fill space with stories about how much is wagered  on the Super Bowl. The illegal wager estimate invariably is terrible, netting out anywhere from $100 billion dollars (Danny Sheridan) to perhaps a more accurate count, $5 billon (all the adults in the industry). Legally, it's expected that gamblers in Vegas will wager close to $90 million this year, with the books hoping for profits totalling $4-5 million, if past years are any guide.

To put that in perspective, Vegas makes just under $200 million in penny slots EACH MONTH. All which means the Superbowl, despite the hype, is drop in the bucket for the casinos. And, if anything, poses a tremendous risk...

Russell Wilson finishing third in the Rookie of the Year voting is outrageous. No quarterback in the league played better than him over the final eight weeks of the season, rookie or otherwise. Feel free to start watching the games, media members. The Playhouse, of course, was a little late to the party themselves, maintaining until November that Matt Flynn, not Wilson, should have been the Seahawks starter. Savvy...

Rick Reilly is an asshole...
