BCS Title Game

Perhaps The Crew should be ill more often. We kept it short and sweet yesterday, feeling horrid from a multiple-day illness that had knocked us down, but, apparently not out, because we gave out two easy winners with the Giants and Broncos. Denver, of course, won outright and to hear ESPN and the social media world tell it it was both the best game ever and finest performance by a quarterback in the NFL history. It was a good game, but it was neither, not close.

A couple thoughts/stats before The Super Play of the Day...

Speaking of Tebow, The Crew is starting to come around, if only somewhat. First of all, he seems like a good kid, he really does. We could do without his religious proclaimations, yes, but considering some of the bad apples in sports, if that's the worst thing he does, then we're fine with it. Secondly, anytime he is asked about the 'Tebow Time' crap he will, without fail, mention his teammates or say that it was instead 'Bronco Time,' declining to make the story about himself. Not everyone would do that.

There is still something chronically annoying about the way he is treated by game announcers and analysts, who tend to treat him like he's retarded, often making excuses for him when fails or praising him for acts that are otherwise routine.

For example, late in regulation Sunday, as Denver was driving for a potential game-winning score, Tebow missed a wide-open receiver running a simple in cut by nearly five yards. Dude literally threw it right into the ground. Phil Simms responded by calling it a 'tough throw.' It was nothing of the sort. In fact, nearly every starting quarterback in the league, save Mark Sanchez, would have completed it 99 out of 100 times.

Simms is not alone in treating him with kid gloves. Tebow is frequently complimented for things that if it were any other QB, it would sound totally ludicrous, such throwing a spiral or dropping back in the pocket without tripping over himself.

We suspect game crews are overcompensating for all the crap that is said about Tebow on radio shows and social media by all his detractors, much of which is hysterical ranting. And that is understandable. But it's embarrassing nonetheless and they do him a disservice by not crtiqueing him like anyother player...

Courtesy of our friends at covers.com, Nick Saban is 103-79 ATS as a college coach; Les Miles is a far more pedestrian 55-61-6...

As of late Monday night 63 percent of the action is coming in on LSU, but virtually all the big money bets are coming in on Alabama, according to Jay Kornegay, the sportsbook director at the Las Vegas Hotel (formerly the Las Vegas Hilton). Not surprising, then, that the Tide is now a 2.5-point favorite after opening as a 1.5 dog in most places. Kornegay also reports via Twitter that money is starting to pour in on the over, pushing the number to 41.5 after opening at 38.5...

First scoring play of the game being a safety is 50/1 at sportsbook.com. It might be worth a shot considering the quality of the defenses and special team units on both sides, not to mention it's how the Falcons and Giants opened up the scoring in their game yesterday...

Super Play of the Day
We'll keep it simple: We like LSU in convincing fashion and don't understand the line movement in 'Bama's direction. The Tigers have been tested all season and have already beat 'Bama once on the road this season. No reason they won't do it again closer to home. LSU ML +110

Record to date: Overall, 2-1; Super Plays of the Day, 0-1
