Welcome to Joe Berger's Playhouse (NYSE: JBP), the CC's most anonymous, low-stakes sports handicapping service. JBP, created in 2009, has to date never posted a losing month and guarantees 60 percent winners over the course of the year.
We're off to good start this season, finishing January with a very solid -- and totally undocumented -- 30-18 record ATS, betting mostly college hoops but with some pro and college football mixed in. The February campaign has started well, too, with JBP posting an early 2-1 record, including an easy cover last night with Boston College -1.5 against Virginia; the Eagles led by 20 at the break and were never really threatened.
Hence forward, our skilled collection of one amateur handicapper will post at least four picks a week, save for the most dreaded time on the sports calender: the week of the Major League Baseball All-Star game.
JBP to date: 32-19 (63 percent)
Today's play: Rhode Island -3 @ Charlotte.
The once-solid Charlotte program is absolutely dreadful this season, especially lately. The 49ers have lost seven of nine and are 12th place in the 14-team Atlantic 10. Rhode Island, meanwhile, seems to have found its early season grove, riding a three-game winning streak after losing three of four. The Rams play close to zero defense, but the outside shooting of Jimmy Baron (over 40 percent from beyond the arc) and the inside play of Kahiem Seawright (14 ppg, 7 rpg) should be enough to get the cover as a short road favorite.
