July 12, 2012

The Crew continued a solid run on the diamond Tuesday, picking up a few units when the All-Star Game went under the total of 8.5. It certainly didn't look good early, as the NL scored five runs in the top on the first, but somehow that baby held on. No complaints. We've lost pieces of crap like that many times. Again, feel free to chart our progress at Wagerminds.com.

No Super Play today or yesterday, because obviously there was nothing of significance going on besides the shitty ESPYs -- which is to say there was absolutely nothing happening of significance on the sports front the last two days. But we do have a couple thoughts...

The Playhouse has been down the Penn St path before, and honestly we have no interest in rehashing our antipathy for the Joe Paterno, who is a moral degenerate and a colossal failure as a human being, and the State College community, more generally, which continues to make excuse after excuse for him, though he was a moral degenerate and colossal failure as a human being.

We don't care how many men he supposedly positively impacted, how much money he donated and raised for the university or how many games he won as a coach. Additionally, we care not at all that he lived humbly, or that placed an emphasis upon academics or that he reminded people of their grandfather.

The release of the Freeh report Thursday reveals the true character of Joe Paterno: He was someone who cared far more about his image and legacy than the well being of the various children who were forcibly raped on the Penn State campus, where he wielded almost dictatorial power. Joe Paterno was a miserable dude, and the world is a better place without him. We said it, and it's not overly harsh -- it's the truth...

Before the season started, The Crew took a shot at some totals and picked division, pennant and World Series winners. As we head into the de-facto second half of the season, here's a look at our picks moving forward:

  • Totals
    • D'Backs over 86.5. Probably not going to happen but not impossible either. Arizona is one game under .500 and would have to finish the season playing .584 baseball for this baby to cash.
    • Reds under 87.5. This one will be really close. Cincy is in second place in the NL Central behind Pittsburgh at 47-38, meaning we need them to play close to .500 the rest of the way to have a chance.
  • Division Winners - (These were for entertainment purposes only. No action on any of these)
    • Phillies - We know the offense is wretched, but their record is embarrassing considering the talent of the pitching staff. No chance.
    • D'Backs - At four games back, this is still a distinct possibility. We, however, thought Arizona would be much better than they have shown so far.
    • Cards - St. Louis offered really good value at the beginning of the season to win the NL Central at +215. After seemingly being the class of the division early, they have cooled off, but remain only 2.5 back of Pittsburgh.
    • Yankees - While Baltimore is a good story, New York, ahead by seven in AL East, is in good shape here.
    • Angels - Los Angeles has out played the Rangers over the last two months. The problem is that they were perhaps the worst team in baseball in April. The Angels are only four games back.
  • Wild Card
    • Giants - Lead the NL West.
    • Marlins - Miami had one good month but otherwise have been terrible. At five games back in the wild card, it's not our of the realm of possibility, but they have many teams to jump
    • Rangers - Lead the AL West.
    • Rays -- Tampa is a half game out.
  • MVP
    • Justin Upton, Arizona - Worst pick of the bunch. Dude has seven home runs and 37 RBI and there's whispers that he may be on the trading block. He's been awful.
    • Robinson Cano, New York Yankees -- Cano is having his usual great year, but he'd probably have to go on a tear in the second half to win the MVP.

Fifty days separate us from the start of the college football season. If it wouldn't prove devastating to our seven readers and 30 Twitter followers worldwide (we have one in Canada who posts silly things about maple syrup, denim and the CFL), we'd go into hibernation today and regain consciousness the morning of August 30. It's just not going to be possible to watch the Mariners for too much longer without developing a massive dependency on LSD, the only substance known to man that could make that team entertaining...
