FEB. 12, 2009

Another great night for JBP. Yes, we were worried when North Carolina was down by eight at the half, especially considering they blew an early double-digit lead. The Tarheels, however, overwhelmed Duke in the second half, turning a close game into an easy cover. We had an inkling to parlay the -2 with the over (154.5) -- which would have cashed nicely -- but we're not ones to complain after a profitable night.

JBP to date: 40-23 (63.4 percent)
Today's plays: Gonzaga -4 @ St. Mary's; Montana St. +5 @ NAU; Arizona -2.5 vs. USC

Gonzaga has won 21 of 22 inside the West Coast Conference, with their last defeat coming at St. Mary's last season. That night the Gaels were led by their star, Patty Mills, a member of the Australian national team who is out of the lineup with a broken wrist. Without Mills, St. Mary's is pretty ordinary, as evidenced by their 19-point defeat Saturday at Santa Clara, and Gonzaga has fed on ordinary teams in conference for almost a decade now.

Northern Arizona will be playing without four-year starting point guard Josh Wilson, who is out for the year with a broken foot. Also, the Lumberjacks, who are just 3-8 in Big Sky play, have won just five home games all year and only three were against D-I competition. Montana St. getting points here is a gift.

Arizona has won five in a row overall and are 4-1 at home in Pac-10 play. They controlled the teams' previous meeting in Los Angeles, only to lose by one after the Wildcats committed a foul 50 feet from the basket with the score tied. Thus, there's also a revenge angle in play for the Wildcats.
