Absolutely horrid week for The Crew, who wiffed big time on some rather large plays, including Marquette (-1.5) Thursday -- when the American public incidentally was subjected to some of the worst basketball ever played, pick-up, YMCA or otherwise. The Louisville-Michigan St game was particularly dreadful. If for some unknown reason you are interested in checking out our pathetic record, visit our profile at Wagerminds.com.
A couple thoughts before the sure-to-lose Super Play of the Day...
Much to everyone's relief TV evangelist and all-around crazy dude Pat Robertson weighed in on Peyton Manning's decision to sign with the Broncos, telling viewers of "The 700 Club" Thursday that his boy Tim Tebow was treated 'shabbily' by Denver and that an injury to Manning would 'serve [the Broncos] right.'
A very nice sentiment indeed.
Robertson, of course, back-tracked from those comments through a spokesman Friday, but he meant every word he said, so his spokesman should have saved his breath.
We at The Playhouse, meanwhile, can't wait for Robertson, who now seems consumed with how marginal NFL players are treated, to express similar concern for Drew Stanton, a career backup who earlier this month signed with the Jets to serve behind Mark Sanchez, a move considering recent events now seems regrettable.
Stanton has since been traded to the Colts and we are sure that Robertson is outraged...
VCU head coach Shaka Smart this week confirmed what everyone not named Seth Davis already knew, turning down a lucrative offer from Illinois to remain at VCU, this despite Davis' contention that the Illinois basketball job is better than being a male porn star.
Twice in the last ten days Davis, who somehow works for SI and CBS Sports, told The Dan Patrick Show that Illinois was "top ten job." Dudes who work at VCU, which last time we checked was still located in Richmond, Va, don't usually turn down significant pay increases and a chance to coach at a top ten program.
So something has to be up, right?
Maybe Smart is a different sort of guy. Maybe he's comfortable where he is and wants to follow through with the commitment he made to his current players. Or maybe, just maybe, he thinks the Illinois job kinda sucks and is most certainly not among the best in the country -- like everyone else not named Seth Davis...
NFL commissioner Roger Goodell hammered the New Orleans Saints Wednesday, fining the team $500,000 and docking them two draft picks, while suspending head coach Sean Payton for the entire 2012 season and former defensive coordinator Gregg Williams indefinitely for their role in a bounty scandal.
Whether the penalties were excessive is not for us to say. But the inane logic used by the Saints and their defenders -- that they weren't the only ones doing it -- to justify that they were overly severe is entirely foolish.
Drinking and driving, for instance, is an epidemic problem in this country. It happens every day, and as we all know very few are actually caught. Those who are should not be held accountable because, you know, they weren't the only ones doing it? That's essentially what the Saints are saying.
Grow up, be adults and stop lying to the commissioner -- which is probably the principal reason the penalties were so harsh in the first place.
