Much to our surprise, we stemmed the tide a bit Saturday, coming away with a win on the Tigers +114. Temporarily, at least, that has allayed any concerns that we were headed for a precipitous fall after our recent run of success. Stay tuned, though. It very easily could get ugly.
One quick clarification before The Super Plays (plural) of the Day...
We didn't mean to single out New York Times writer Pete Thamel in The Playhouse Saturday, when in referring to the NFL draft we believe we wrote 'he has no fucking idea what he's talking about.'
To be fair, Thamel is one of literally thousands of writers and/or talking heads who has no fucking idea what they are talking about. For us, he just happened to be one of the most conspicuous.
Indeed, save very few, none of these a-holes have anything remotely resembling the experience required to evaluate any of the picks made over the last three days. They don't watch film, and even if they did, they wouldn't know what to look for because they're not scouts or coaches either.
That was our point, and it's why any time we hear one of these guys say, 'You can plug this guy in for years to come' or 'This fills a big need for them,' we want to light ourselves on fire.
Aaron Maybin, drafted in 2009 at No. 11, supposedly filled a big need for the Bills, who were desperately wanting to buttress their pass rush. Two years later, Maybin is no longer with the team, having the distinction of making 35 tackles in his NFL career.
At best, maybe a third of the guys drafted in the first round Thursday will make a profound impact in the league. Others will have solid and reliable, though unspectacular, careers. And then others still will flame out entirely.
Bravo, then, to Mike Florio of Profootballtalk.com, which was the only major outlet that didn't entirely embarrass themselves in giving out post draft 'grades.'
At this point, there's no way to know who will fall into what category, and any declaration otherwise is just a guess.
Super Plays of the Day
Minnesota +109, White Sox +110 and (homer pick alert) Seattle +130
