April 28, 2012

As the loyal reader of The Playhouse can attest, The Crew was absolutely killing it in baseball earlier this week, ripping off ten of 12 winners. Naturally, we then lost our last two -- there's a lot more where that came from, because, frankly, we'd be surprised if we won again before May -- but our record still stands at over 58 percent for the year. And unlike some hacks out there, it's not artificially padded by laying down on a slew of -300 favorites. Indeed, we have generated a very respectable 17 units of profit for our zero clients.

Couple things to go over before getting to The Super Play of the Day...

We hate the NFL draft. It's just horrible. For each person who knows what they are talking about, there's about 10,000 who have no clue, us included. To wit, Pete Thamel, a very gifted writer but horrible evaluator of talent who covers college football and basketball for The New York Times, tweeted out this gem Friday, a day after the first round:

The best value pick in the draft last night was Pittsburgh getting DeCastro at 24. Perfect Steeler. Will dominate for a decade

Thamel, of course, was referring to Stanford offensive lineman David DeCastro, who in the eyes of many was expected to go much higher. To be blunt, he has no fucking idea what he's talking about.

He's not a coach, he's not a scout and he doesn't watch film. It's a very complex, sophisticated game and he's no more qualified to evaluate football players than we are to work for NASA . We've seen the shuttle launch a couple times, but would we know what it takes to actually get it into to space? Probably not.

Likewise, though he may cover football for a living as a beat reporter, Thamel, like the rest of us, really only has a very basic understanding of the game.

DeCastro may indeed 'dominate for a decade' and become an integral part of multiple championship teams, but it wouldn't change the fact that Thamel has no way of knowing that...

Speaking of people who have no fucking idea what they are talking about, NFL Films, which usually does great work, released their list of Top Ten Heisman Winners in the NFL, and decided to include Tim Tebow at No. 8.

That was ahead of Marcus Allen, Earl Campbell, Bo Jackson, Tim Brown and Eddie George. It was also ahead of Cam Newton, who at No. 10 also didn't belong on the list, but still laughable because no GM living or dead would pass over him for Tebow.

Beyond embarrassing...

For those who missed it, Health.com posted this stunning bit of journalism to their site this week...

This Seattle Times columnist, who actually writes stuff far worse than this all the time, thinks Wisconsin's Russell Wilson, easily one of the most visible personalities in college football last season, is a no-name...

This Seattle Times employee, on the other hand, actually has a clue. Geoff Baker, who does a great job covering the Mariners, writes about life on the field, where managers and players, unlike nerds like us, aren't consumed with sabermetrics...

Super Play of the Day

We'll take another flier on the Tigers +114.
