Big Pimpin'

Save the ESPYs and the World Cup, it’s difficult to think of a bigger waste of time than the spectacle that has become SEC media day. We get it: Football is king in the South -- in a way that literacy and bathing will never be -- so it’s not too surprising that over 1,000 media credentials were given out and that ESPN covered it like a presidential primary.

We expected every coach in the league not employed by Florida or Alabama to pronounce themselves to be ready to compete. We likewise expected Urban Meyer to be his smug and arrogant self. And we expected Nick Saban to be dismissive.

What we didn’t expect, however, was him to make one of the most inane comments in the history of sports. Appearing before reporters, Saban shamelessly compared NFL agents to pimps. The irony, of course, is that he pockets more than $5M annually to coach 18 to 22 year-old kids who make nothing despite generating millions for the institutions they play for.

So while the pervasiveness of agents hanging around college campuses has ceratainly become an issue, it's no worse than those who have been whoring out players for profit for decades: A-hole coaches Saban, the universities and the NCAA.

Want proof? Look no further than the Playhouse’s own backyard, Seattle, where everywhere look there's Jake Locker's image, whether it's plastered on a bus, billboard or poster. Guess how much Locker makes by lending himself to this marketing campaign.

Now, that’s Big Pimpin’.
