November 19, 2011

Fairly solid NFL Sunday for The Crew, who went 2-1, throwing cold water on the notion, however temporarily, that we are fast becoming an opposite bet shop. We did whiff on the Super Play once again. Feel free to start opposite betting that, because we haven't hit one of those since people were under the impression Penn St. ran a clean program.

Couple thoughts/stats before the Super Play...

Speaking of Penn St, we did not want to touch on them again, we swear. But Franco Harris, who played for the Nittany Lions from 1968 to 1971, has set a new standard for tone deafness and assholery since Jerry Sandusky was arrested two weeks ago.

First, immediately after Joe Paterno was fired, Harris, displaying infinite awareness, called Paterno a 'scapegoat' who did the right thing in merely passing the allegations up the chain of command despite easily being the most powerful man on campus, if not all of central Pennsylvania.

Undaunted, later that week, Harris told a Pittsburgh TV station he wanted a face-to-face meeting with PSU's acting president to ask why Joe Paterno had not been re-hired, making him perhaps the lone person on the planet who did not know the answer.

Then yesterday, he kept it going, telling USA Today that Paterno's firing didn't have "anything to do with the scandal" and was instead something the PSU Board of Directors had wanted for years. The scandal, in his mind, was a convenient excuse.

"It doesn't make sense, especially when there were only three games left," he said, placing the fortunes of PSU's football team over those of the alleged victims in this case.

Franco Harris is a dick...

Mike Bianchi, a columnist for the Orlando Sentinel, in an apparent effort to appear even more feebleminded than Harris, wrote this week that the NCAA should strip away wins from Joe Paterno so former Florida State coach Bobby Bowden may be 'restored to his rightful place as the winningest coach in the history of major-college football.'

Nevermind for second that Bianchi is suggesting that Bowden could benefit from a child sex abuse scandal and consider only that, as bad as allegations were, they weren't NCAA violations, they were criminal ones. People involved in the case will likely go to jail, but the Penn St players themselves weren't ineligible. The wins should stand and Bianchi should be ashamed of himself.

Oklahoma State quarterback Brandon Weeden, whose team lost as a 26-point favorite last night, was the Heisman front runner for less than week. Before you think about putting Houston's Case Keenum up there: In 10 games this season, he has faced seven defenses who are ranked 90th or worse...

By the way, if you would have put $100 on Iowa to win straight up, the Vegas Hilton would have paid out $2500...

Today is the first time since 1997 that USC, which is catching 15 on the road at Oregon, is more than a two touchdown underdog...

Another reason why Vegas takes bets: Nevada sportsbooks had a terrible month in September, winning only 4.73 percent of football wagers. They still netted $11.7M...

Super Play of the Day

We really don't want to get involved in Penn St games, but if the oddsmakers are going to put up a number, we have to be ready to take advantage of it. No way the Nittany Lions have anything left after the two weeks they've been through and Ohio State, who is coming off a SU loss to Purdue, have covered their last seven when coming off a road game.

Ohio State -6.5

Other plays

Purdue +1.5
Wake Forest -10
